Recitation of the Medicine Buddha Prayer and the Three Tantras during Saga Dawa

Every year, on the auspicious occasion of Saga Dawa (Vesak month according to the Tibetan Lunar Calendar), the Men-Tsee-Khang Sowa Rigpa Medical College, Dharamsala, conducts prayer sessions dedicated to spiritual growth and the accumulatio of merit. This year on 26-27 May 2026, the college organized a two-day religious observance that included the recitation of sman bla’i mdo chog (the Medicine Buddha prayer), followed by recitation of rgyud gsum (the three Tantras) and sman gyi srung madam Can gyi gsol kha (Detailed Medicine Deity and Protector’s ritual), The ceremonies were led by the Head monk of Men-Tsee-Khang.

The event was attended by Cultural Director Dr. Tsering Norbu, Tibetan physicians and astro-science practitioners, students and faculty members of Men-Tsee-Khang Sowa Rigpa Medical College. Over the course of the two days, participants were provided with an opportunity for introspection and spiritual reflection, enabling them to cultivate compassion, loving kindness, and a deeper sense of responsibility as future healthcare professionals.

The gathering also served as a precious occasion to express gratitude and reverence to the unbroken lineage of Sowa-Rigpa masters, including Medicine Buddha and Yuthok Yonten Gompo, as well as the eminent scholars, practitioners, protectors, and deities associated with the Sowa Rigpa tradition.

As students of Sowa Rigpa continue their journey of exploring this holistic system of healing, such spiritual practices provide a firm ethical and contemplative foundation. They inspire students to pursue academic excellence, cultivate mental stability, and develop emotional maturity, thereby preparing them to become responsible, compassionate, and ethical Tibetan physicians in the future.
