Monthly Tsechu Recitation of Yuthok Nyingthig at Men-Tsee-Khang Sowa Rigpa College: Bridging Tibetan Medicine and Spiritual Practice

The practice of Yuthok Nyingthig represents a profound integration of Tibetan Buddhist spirituality with the medical science of Sowa Rigpa. This tradition, revealed by Yuthok Yonten Gonpo the Younger—the eminent physician of 12th-century Tibet—forms a vital part of the spiritual heritage associated with Tibetan medicine. Revered as an emanation of the Medicine Buddha, Yuthok Yonten Gonpo the Younger transmitted this lineage to cultivate both medical expertise and spiritual realization.

At its core, the Yuthok Nyingthig offers methods that refine a practitioner’s inner awareness, strengthening diagnostic sensitivity and healing capacity. It presents medicine not merely as a clinical discipline, but as a path of spiritual transformation, where compassion, insight, and meditative realization play a central role in patient care.

In accordance with Tibetan Buddhist tradition, these practices are performed on the tenth day of each lunar month, known as “Tsechu.” This observance aligns with the traditions of the Nyingma lineage and the broader Vajrayana system. The significance of this day is further enhanced by its association with Padmasambhava, the great Tantric master who is believed to have manifested on the tenth day of the Monkey Month.

Continuing this sacred tradition, Men-Tsee-Khang Sowa Rigpa Medical College has been observing monthly Tsechu recitations every year. In 2026, the first Tsechu observance was successfully conducted on 26th February at the college hall, bringing together faculty members, students, physicians, and astrology practitioners in collective practice.

The Tsechu recitations will continue throughout the year on the following dates: 28th March, 26th April, 26th May, 24th June, 24th July, 22nd August, 21st September, 21st October, 19th November, and 19th December. On these occasions, the Men-Tsee-Khang community will gather to uphold and deepen the spiritual dimension of Sowa Rigpa through the dedicated practice of Yuthok Nyingthig.
