Demonstration on the Management of Biomedical Waste by Shri Sanjeev Sharma, Principal Scientific Officer cum in charge of the Regional Laboratory of HP State Pollution Control Board, Dharamsala

In the afternoon of 4th Oct. 2025, Shri Sanjeev Sharma, Principal Scientific Officer cum in charge of the Regional Laboratory of HP State Pollution Control Board, Dharamsala, graced the induction program for the recently admitted academic year 2025-26, where he spoke extensively on the management of biomedical waste and other wastes. The talk also aimed to garner awareness and effective implementation of the Biomedical Waste Act.

He began the talk by defining BMW and why it is more important today than ever in order to prevent the hazards of healthcare infection. He also detailed further into the composition of wastes in general and BMW in particular, to the process of management, segregation, pre-treatment, collection of storage, bar coding and treatment facility.
Shri Sharma ji also shed light on the importance of needle mutilation and additionally explained the methods used in a common biomedical waste treatment facility.

He also enlightened on the liability and penalty issues if non-compliance is received as per the NGT direction and what duties are to be performed by the designated authority, including formation of committee, submission of report, record maintenance, register update and so on. Moreover, the students also get oriented with regard to the definition, composition and treatment of the solid waste management, hazardous waste management, as well as E-waste Management.

The session concluded with a short question and answer. His takeaway message of wisdom reflects upon the importance of sustainable living, where we should think globally and act locally, together with the concept of live and let live and instilled an idea of planting a tree on one’s birthday. Dr. Ngawang Soepa Bhutia, Principal of Men-Tsee-Khang Sowa Rigpa Medical College, presented a small token of appreciation at the end of the session. In addition to college faculty and students, colleagues from our Pharmacy and Quality Control departments attended this meaningful workshop.
