Collaboration between Men-Tsee-Khang Sowa-Rigpa Medical College & Hospital and the Centre for Spirituality and Tibetan Healing Initiatives, University of Minnesota

The Men-Tsee-Khang Sowa-Rigpa Medical College & Hospital successfully conducted the Tibetan Medicine Educational Program for students from the Center for Spirituality & Healing, University of Minnesota (UMN), USA, from 21–30 May 2026. The program is a key component of the long-standing academic collaboration between the two institutions, which has fostered educational exchange, cross-cultural learning, and the promotion of traditional Tibetan medicine for more than two decades.

Since the establishment of this partnership in 2005, Men-Tsee-Khang and the University of Minnesota have worked closely to enhance understanding of Sowa-Rigpa (Tibetan Medicine) among international students and healthcare professionals. The annual educational program has served as a valuable platform for academic engagement, cultural exchange, and the dissemination of Tibetan medical knowledge.

This year, ten students from the University of Minnesota, led by Dr. Tenzin Namdul, Director of Tibetan Healing Initiatives, participated in an intensive educational program designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of Tibetan medicine. Participants received instruction from faculty members and medical practitioners representing various departments of the college and hospital.

The six-day academic program covered a broad range of topics, including the concepts of health and disease in Tibetan medicine, the relationship between Tibetan medicine and Buddhism, Tibetan Astro-science, preventive healthcare, digestive disorders, mental health, addiction management, chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, Tibetan pharmacology, aging and geriatric care, stages of dying and end-of-life care, pulse diagnosis, urinalysis, accessory therapies, compassion in medical practice, and contemporary research developments in Tibetan medicine.

In addition to classroom lectures, participants engaged in practical workshops, hospital visits, interactive discussions, and cultural activities. Educational visits to Men-Tsee-Khang’s Pharmacy, Museum, and Bookstore provided valuable experiential learning opportunities and deeper insights into Tibetan culture, healthcare traditions, and community life. Student presentations, panel discussions, and question-and-answer sessions further enriched the learning experience and encouraged meaningful dialogue between the University of Minnesota participants and the students, faculty, and healthcare professionals of Men-Tsee-Khang.

The program was conducted smoothly and successfully, with all scheduled lectures, workshops, field visits, and cultural activities completed as planned. Participants demonstrated enthusiastic engagement throughout the course and expressed a strong interest in the subjects presented.

The successful completion of the 2026 Tibetan Medicine Educational Program reflects the shared commitment of Men-Tsee-Khang and the University of Minnesota to advancing cross-cultural education, promoting holistic healthcare, and preserving and developing traditional Tibetan medical knowledge. Men-Tsee-Khang extends its sincere appreciation to all faculty members, staff, organizers, and participants whose dedication and support contributed to the success of the program. The institution looks forward to continuing this valuable partnership and strengthening international academic cooperation in the years ahead.
