Students of Sowa-Rigpa Medical Colleges pursuing the Bachelor of Sowa Rigpa Medicine and Surgery (BSRMS) are required to study the identification of medicinal plants, their characteristics, and their uses in Tibetan medicine. This subject, known as Materia Medica (Subject Code: MZ), forms one of the core components of the course.
In order to provide students with practical, real-life exposure, our college organizes an annual educational trip to Marhi, Manali, and Rohtang Pass. The aim of this trip is to introduce students to naturally grown herbal medicines in the mountains and enhance their field experience.

For the academic year 2025–2026, the trip was successfully organized between 29th July and 12th August. The program was coordinated under the leadership and guidance of Assistant Professor Dr. Penpa Dhondup, who took full responsibility for planning and executing the trip. A total of 20 students participated, including the 1st Professional (27th Medical Batch, 2025–2026) and the 2nd Professional (25th Medical Batch, 2022–2023).
During the course of the trip, students were thoroughly trained in the identification, classification, and study of herbal medicines under the supervision of Dr. Penpa Dhondup. To assess their learning, an examination on medicinal plant identification was conducted at the conclusion of the fieldwork.
The trip was successfully completed, and all students returned safely to the college in Dharamshala, enriched with valuable practical knowledge that will contribute significantly to their academic and professional growth.
