Workshop on Biomedical Waste Management at Men-Tsee-Khang Sowa-Rigpa Medical College April 2023

On April 28, 2023, a workshop on ‘Biomedical Waste Management’ was organized by the College wherein Shri. Sanjeev Sharma, the Senior Scientific Officer of the Regional Laboratory of H.P. State Pollution Control Board was invited to educate and create awareness on proper management and disposal of biomedical waste. The workshop was attended by all the students, faculty members, hospital staff, and other concerned members of the institute. The topics dealt with during the workshop were, the meaning of biomedical waste, its composition, hazards of healthcare waste, the proper process of bio-medical waste management, segregation of biomedical waste in four different color-coded containers, the importance of needle mutilation, disposal of biomedical waste, the liability of the in-charge of hospitals under law, duties of the in-charge of hospitals, maintenance and updation of biomedical waste management register and annual biomedical waste management report submission. The speaker stressed upon effective management of healthcare waste and efficient implementation of the process so that we prevent the hazardous effects caused by untreated biomedical waste. The session ended with an interactive Q&A session covering questions relating to pharmaceutical waste, disinfection, handling of mercury spillage, and ways of managing biomedical waste during small medical camp visits.
